Using skills from his electrical engineering degree, Garrett Durland converted a plastic 3D printer into a ceramic printer. He describes his process as machine-assisted coil building. The printer requires constant attention and intervention to produce original artwork that will eventually be glazed by brush and fired in an electric kiln.

  • This translucent porcelain lamp was made using machine-assisted coil building. It appears that gravity is causing 30 triangles to droop upward on the 6.5” round pleated shape. I use a modified 3D printer to print clay that I have prepared by wedging in extra water with my hands until I detect the correct feel for the viscosity or thickness of the clay.

    The spiral coils of the lamp are printed in a single layer using a 5mm nozzle. After final inspection and clean-up, I fire the lamps cone 6. The lamps as shown do not have glaze, but if you would like a shiny finish or to change the color of the lamp, please ask about adding a coat of glaze.

    The lamps can be hung using the included hardware, and the cord is 15 feet long with an ON-OFF switch. It accepts a standard Edison style bulb (incandescent / LED / CFL / halogen). Choose your preferred light color to give your lamp a beautiful soft warm light, or a bright white light (bulb not included).

  • This translucent porcelain lamp was made using machine-assisted coil building. It appears that 42 waves are attached to the 6.5” round pleated shape.

    I designed this lamp to fit a 13" lampshade but a 10" diameter shade also fits.  Several glaze options available. Two shape varieties are available, one with smooth edges and one with wavy edges.
